How to make a QR code for a PDF that doesn't fail

A QR code doesn't hold your file. It holds a link, and that's where nearly every problem starts. Here's how to avoid them, and if you'd rather do it on your phone, PDF QR Conversor is an Android app.

What a PDF QR code really is

The code stores a web address, and the address opens the PDF. So there are two parts: the file, hosted somewhere, and the QR leading to it. If the file gets deleted, moved or locked, the printed code stops working however perfect it looks.

Three ways to do it

The usual failures

"Request access" when scanning

The file is in the cloud but not open to anyone with the link. Test on a phone where you aren't signed in.

The printed code won't scan

Usually size or contrast. As a practical guide, stay above about 1 inch (2.5 cm) a side for close-up scanning and leave a white margin around it. Dark on light, on a plain background, with no glare.

It's slow to open

A heavy PDF crawls on mobile data. If it's full of photos, compress it first: nobody at a table is going to wait.

The content changed after printing

A regular code always points to the same file. If your document changes often, use a dynamic QR code, which lets you swap the content without reprinting. In PDF QR Conversor that's part of PRO; see dynamic vs static QR codes.

The code expired after a few days

That happens with tools that host the file for a limited time or route the code through a server of theirs. More in a PDF QR code with no expiration.

Common questions

My PDF QR code isn't working. What do I do?

Scan it on another phone that isn't signed in to your account. If it asks for access, it's the file's sharing; if it won't scan, it's the print size or contrast; if it opens an old version, a new copy with a different link was uploaded instead of replacing the file.

How do I put a QR code inside a PDF?

That's the reverse job: save the code as an image and paste it into your document before exporting to PDF, like any other picture. The app saves the code to your gallery.

How do I scan a QR code that's inside a PDF?

Take a screenshot of the page and open it with a reader that scans from images. PDF QR Conversor's reader does that from your gallery.

Can I do it from a computer?

Yes, by uploading the PDF to the cloud and pasting the link into a web generator. The app is for doing it from an Android phone.
